#6. Allergies and Colds

Try to avoid taking anti-histamines or decongestants as they dry out your vocal organs. If you are very bunged-up you should boil some water and inhale the steam for 15-20 minutes with a towel over your head. Do not then speak for 20 minutes.

An old opera singer’s remedy, which is also very effective, is to gently snort warm salt water up your nose (search for nasal lavage/neti pot online) and spit it out of your mouth. You may need to do this several times per day in order to combat a severe cold or allergy in preparation for a gig.
